Thyroid Problems Q & A

What is the thyroid?

In your neck, you have a small gland that’s shaped like a butterfly. It’s called your thyroid, and it creates hormones that are important for several of your body’s processes, including your:

  • Metabolism

  • Heart rate

  • Breathing

  • Body temperature

  • Weight

  • Cholesterol levels

The thyroid also plays a role in women’s menstrual cycles.

Clearly, this gland is important. That’s why thyroid issues are so problematic. The most common thyroid problems are hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) and hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland). These conditions affect women much more frequently than men.

What is hypothyroidism?

There are many different types of hypothyroidism, all caused by your thyroid producing insufficient amounts of thyroid hormones. The most common form of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s disease.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Hair and skin that feels dry and coarse

  • Heavy periods

  • Feeling cold often

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to talk to the team at Jiki Medical Associates so they can get you started with hypothyroidism treatment.

What is hyperthyroidism?

This condition causes your thyroid to produce too much of its hormones, causing symptoms like:

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Weight loss

  • Irritability

  • Muscle weakness

  • Infrequent and light periods

  • Trouble seeing or irritated eyes

  • Feeling hot often

Again, the team at Jiki Medical Associates is here to apply their extensive knowledge of thyroid problems to help balance your thyroid hormone levels.

Can thyroid problems be treated?

Absolutely. Whether you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, the experienced team at Jiki Medical Associates is here to work with you and apply treatments that help your body maintain the right levels of thyroid hormones.

If you have hypothyroidism, treatment usually centers on taking medication that adds thyroid hormones to your system, bringing you up to normal levels.

For hyperthyroidism, treatment focuses on trying to regulate the thyroid gland. That could mean taking medication to block your thyroid from creating more thyroid hormones or to block your body’s uptake of thyroid hormones.

There are also procedures that permanently stunt your thyroid gland, including the application of radioactive iodine or the surgical removal of part of the gland. Your Jiki Medical Associates provider talks with you about all of your options and helps you choose the right one for your body and your wellness goals.
