Sexual Transmitted Disease Test Q & A

Who should get tested for STDs?

If you’re sexually active, it’s important to get tested for STDs on a regular basis. Generally, you should get your first test when you become sexually active, and you should get tested again every time you have intercourse with a new partner.

Most STDs don’t have any symptoms. Getting tested after every new partner ensures that you stay informed about any diseases or infections that could impact your health. It also means you don’t unwittingly spread an STD to someone else.

Which STDs are most common?

So you can get the appropriate testing, here is a quick guide to the most common STDs and the groups who should get screened for them.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia

These STDs are extremely common and most frequently affect women and men who have sex with other men.

Genital herpes

This condition can affect both men and women. It’s very common to have herpes with no symptoms, making it easy to pass onto a partner without being aware.

Hepatitis

If you were born before 1965, you should get tested for hepatitis C. Regardless of your age, if you haven’t been vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, you should get tested for these conditions, too.

HIV

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone get screened for HIV at least once during their lifetime.

Other conditions for which you may want to get tested include syphilis and HPV. Talk with your Jiki Medical Associates provider about your sexual history, and they can recommend the right STD testing to protect your health and keep you informed about your status.

What should I expect from my STD test?

It depends on the STD and the specific testing. Most tests require a urine sample, a small blood sample, or a swab to collect a tissue sample. Your Jiki Medical Associates provider talks with you about what to expect. Their team prioritizes your comfort before, during, and after your test.
